Poole's Diner
Have we mentioned that we LOVE to eat? Yeah, it's kind of an addiction. Good thing North Carolina has so many delicious options! This time we're talking about some good ole' Mac-and-Cheese. Not just ANY Mac-and-Cheese. This is the kind of Mac-and-Cheese you wake up in the middle of the night drooling for. We had heard wonderful things about Poole's diner and were eager to give it a shot. So we headed on downtown to this cute little diner.
As we were waiting for our food, we were first impressed with.... the bathroom! We're dead serious! Guys, you wonder why we females take so long in there. Well we have finally found a good way to answer that question. Stocked with everything a girl could need-- like bobby-pins, floss, and hairspray, this bathroom is a female's sanctuary (go ahead and laugh boys, but our ladies understand how awesome that is).
We started out well with the sunburst tomatoes. The bread was excellent and topped with flavorful onions, tomatoes and vinaigrette.
Now back to their signature dish--and quite possibly the best mac n' cheese in town. This great little place has a giant, ever-changing chalkboard menu. But a few items don't change and thankfully, this is one of them. It comes out as a MOUND of golden, bubbly goodness. Browned on top to give it an extra crunch and creamy, cheesy on bottom. We kid you not, as soon as we took our first bites, we looked at each other and our jaws dropped. It's that good. It's a must try! Even Meg (who puts a heap of pepper on everything for extra taste) said the flavor was perfect as it is. That is quite an accomplishment. Hats off to you Poole's!
Located at 426 S McDowell St, Raleigh, NC 27601, it can be a little harder to spot. We suggest parking nearby and locating the restaurant on foot.
