Beasley's Chicken + Honey
When deciding on which restaurant to try, we quickly honed in on a popular downtown Raleigh favorite--Beasley's Chicken + Honey. We saw images of food from the menu online and immediately started salivating... Let's just say their menu called to our southern roots. And we were NOT disappointed. We ordered the signature: Fried Chicken and Waffles with honey to drizzle over top. We also got a platter of some of their more popular sides: pimento mac & cheese, mashed potatoes & gravy, and their award-winning biscuits (we know, carb over-load--just the way we like it).
Starting with the chicken and waffles, this was our first time ever trying it and we have to say that we finally get the hype about it! Upon ordering, the waitress asked if we preferred dark or white meat--something that Meg greatly appreciated as a fan of white meat. The breading on the fried chicken was delectable! It was the right amount of crispy with a hint of sweetness (maybe fried with a bit of honey?). The waffle was your standard waffle, nothing too mind-blowing but it complimented the chicken wonderfully. The honey drizzled over everything was the perfect finishing touch!
As for the sides, we loved the creamy macaroni and cheese and traditional mashed potatoes and gravy. But as far as sides go, nothing can compare to the biscuits! Trust us when we say they are award-winning for a reason! They were so fluffy and came with butter and honey melted on top. We were in love. IN LOVE. We would have ordered a bucket of them if we could have. Words can't describe these biscuits--you'll have to taste them yourself.
As a little bonus, we definitely liked the fact that our drinks came in mason jars. Southern comfort at its finest!
Also, for any of you that may be hesitant to venture into downtown Raleigh (like Meg), the good news is that there is a public parking deck RIGHT next to the restaurant. You get to avoid the annoying search for a parking spot! It's worth the trip into the city!
