Castle Mont Rouge

For this adventure, we explored a true hidden gem--an abandoned castle! Yes, you read that right...a CASTLE. Okay, so maybe not a real one but we were so excited just the same. A local artist named Robert Mihaly began building a castle-inspired home/art studio using marble, cinderblock, and copper about a decade ago. However, after the death of his wife, he left his magnificent castle unfinished. Abandoned, vandalized, and left to rot, this castle truly has a tragic story.

This old castle can be found in Rougemont, NC and is called "Castle Mont Rouge." It sits on the side of a small mountain (in NC terms, that equates to a big hill) so we recommend driving a car that has four wheel drive. There are some pretty views once you make it up there! Meg's small Acura made it up fine, but we prefer to err on the side of caution. For that same reason, we did not enter the castle and do not advise anyone to try! The wooden floorboards are likely very unstable after 10 years of rotting. However, there are plenty of broken windows that you can peak in! Look for the pretty staircase!

Address: 957 Mountain Brook Rd, Rougemont, North Carolina, 27572
